On October 16, FAW-Volkswagen released official images of the ID. AURA L5. The new vehicle has entered the MIIT product public announcement list. It is the second pure electric model in the ID. AURA series and the first pure electric family sedan, and will form the new energy twin stars with the ID. AURA T6, marking a shift in its electrification from single-point launches to a dual-line serialized layout covering sedans and SUVs. The new vehicle measures 4883 mm in length, 2820 mm in wheelbase and 1506 mm in height, with a space utilization rate of 84.4%. It features an electric hatchback tailgate, some variants are equipped with LiDAR, and it offers six body colors. Range, power, battery and price have not yet been announced, and market performance will depend on the final pricing and the proportion of LiDAR-equipped configurations.

On October 16, FAW Group-Volkswagen released official images of the ID. AURA L5. Official information shows that the new car was recently included in the latest batch of product public notices from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). It is the second all-electric model in the ID. AURA series and the series' first all-electric family sedan. Together with the ID. AURA T6, it will form FAW-Volkswagen's 'New Energy Twin Stars.' From a product structure perspective, FAW-Volkswagen's electrification layout has shifted from previous single-point launches to a serialized phase with parallel advancement of sedan and SUV lines.

Design: Bringing concept-car philosophy into production

According to official information, the ID. AURA L5 was jointly created by Chinese and German design teams. It closely reproduces the design essence of the ID. AURA concept car at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show and carries the 'practical naturalism' brand philosophy throughout the vehicle. The exterior adopts a 'flowing water sculpting' design language, creating a coupe-like stance through short overhangs and a long wheelbase. Body dimensions are 4883×1881×1506mm, with a 2820mm wheelbase.

What stands out in these figures is the proportion: a vehicle length of nearly 4.9 meters paired with a 2820mm wheelbase and a height kept at 1506mm forms a 'long wheelbase, low body' combination. Such proportions have previously appeared more often on models that emphasize styling. On family sedans, however, a low-slung stance and rear headroom often require trade-offs. The official answer is a space utilization rate of 84.4%.

Space: Responding to family scenarios with 'space utilization rate' and a large hatchback

In the all-electric family sedan segment, space utilization efficiency has become one of the core indicators of product definition. The announced 'space utilization rate' of the ID. AURA L5 is 84.4%, meaning that within given exterior dimensions, as much length as possible is converted into passenger cabin space.

Another differentiated design is the electric hatchback tailgate. Official data shows that its opening angle exceeds 70° and its opening width exceeds 1000mm. The official statement says this structure breaks the loading-capacity limitations of traditional three-box sedans and improves convenience when loading and unloading large items. For family users, fastback styling usually means a compromise between styling and practicality, and the hatchback structure is one solution that attempts to combine the two.

Smart technology: LiDAR as a configuration on some variants

On the smart technology front, the official information clearly states that some ID. AURA L5 variants will be equipped with LiDAR to enhance convenience in daily travel. However, this official image release did not disclose the specific LiDAR technical solution, perception hardware combination, computing platform, or functional boundaries. The completeness of the related information remains to be disclosed later.

On the exterior, the new model is offered in six colors—white, gray, silver, purple, gold, and blue—covering a relatively broad aesthetic range and targeting young family users.

Market Watch: The Pace Test of Joint-Venture Electrification

From a process perspective, the simultaneous release of official images and the MIIT product disclosure usually indicates that a new model has entered the pre-launch preparation stage. However, as of now, the official side has not announced the ID. AURA L5's range, powertrain type, battery capacity, or price range, saying only that “more product information will be revealed gradually.”

Viewed within the competitive landscape, the all-electric family sedan is a segment where domestic brands entered early and product density is high, with fast iteration and a rapid pace of feature deployment. The challenge for joint-venture brands in this segment mainly comes from the degree of localization in product definition and responsiveness. The ID. AURA L5 chooses a hatchback profile, 84.4% space utilization, and LiDAR as its memorable selling points—a direction that moves closer to local user preferences. Whether these selling points can translate into actual orders still depends on final pricing and feature distribution—especially the proportion of models equipped with LiDAR.

With the ID. AURA T6 and ID. AURA L5 forming the “new energy twin stars,” 一汽-大众 has established two main product lines in the all-electric market: SUVs and sedans. Observation points worth watching going forward include whether the two models' launch cadence is tight, whether sales and charging/energy-replenishment systems can be synchronized, and what proportion of models will carry high-level perception hardware. These variables will jointly determine the actual effectiveness of this round of electrification transformation.
