Dongfeng Fengshen L Series: Three New NEV Models Debut with Full Powertrain Coverage

494
On August 5, three new models from Dongfeng's new energy L series—Fengshen L8Y, L8+, and L9—officially debuted, covering pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extended powertrains, targeting the 100,000-200,000 yuan family SUV market. Dongfeng Group stated it has fully transferred its latest new energy technologies to Fengshen, with the three models launching sequentially from August, marking an important step in Dongfeng's independent passenger vehicle NEV transformation.

On August 5, 2026, Dongfeng Motor Group's independent passenger vehicle segment welcomed a major product launch. Three new models from Dongfeng's new energy L series—Fengshen L8Y, L8+, and L9—made their simultaneous debut, covering pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extended powertrains, targeting different user groups including young families, mainstream families, and multi-member families. According to plans, the three new models will sequentially enter the market starting August 2026.

The most visible highlight of this launch came from the brand symbol's renewal—Dongfeng's classic "Shuang Feiyan" (Twin Swallow) logo was illuminated for the first time. Since Dongfeng's founding in 1969, the Shuang Feiyan has been the most iconic brand identifier of this state-owned enterprise. For 57 years, it carried the weight of "Made in China." This time, the Shuang Feiyan lighting up for the first time means that Dongfeng Fengshen is declaring in the most direct way: in the new energy era, this classic brand is being revitalized.

A Dongfeng Group official stated at the launch that the group has given all its latest new energy technologies to Fengshen—this is the confidence behind the L series full "family" lineup. This three-car simultaneous launch is not simply product expansion but a concrete answer to Dongfeng Group's comprehensive new energy transformation of its independent business unit.

The three new models each have clear positioning and target audiences.

Fengshen L8Y is positioned as a global intelligent electric comfortable SUV, fully embracing young families. For the "self-pleasure" experience, the L8Y pioneered the "Happy Dual C-Position" design, with both driver and passenger seats supporting ventilation, heating, and memory welcome functions, plus three-airbag four-way lumbar support. The 50-inch AR-HUD displays navigation routes in the driver's forward field of view without needing to look down. With a 62-degree large battery, daily commuting achieves a once-weekly charging frequency. The L8Y targets the 100,000 yuan-level pure electric SUV market, focusing on young families' entry-level new energy needs.

Fengshen L8+ is positioned as the intelligent driving and comfort dual flagship, the most technologically advanced of the three models. In the intelligent driving domain, the L8+ is the first to feature Dongfeng Group's latest intelligent driving solution—the Tianyuan Intelligent Driving T800, integrating Momenta R7 world models with a 4nm ThorU 700TOPS super computing chip. The official introduction states that this system evolves the vehicle from "knowing the road" to "understanding the road"—even if the vehicle ahead suddenly drops debris, it can accurately understand the object's movement patterns and achieve smooth deceleration and avoidance. In comfort, the L8+ is equipped with a "luxury car five-piece set," creating a class-above comfortable experience. This model anchors the plug-in hybrid domain, targeting mainstream family users who value intelligent driving experience and comfort.

Fengshen L9 is positioned as the all-around intelligent seven-seat SUV, the largest and most spacious of the three models. At 5 meters in length with a 3-meter wheelbase, it adopts a 2+3+2 seating layout, with seven seats enabling 64 combination modes. The L9 offers both pure electric and range-extended power options, with the pure electric version equipped with a full-stack 800V 4C ultra-fast charging platform, serving both family travel and business needs. This model targets multi-member families and users with dual family-business scenarios.

From a market positioning perspective, the three models focus on the 100,000-200,000 yuan family SUV market—currently the most competitive price segment in China's auto market. In this range, BYD Song series, Geely Galaxy, Changan Deepal, and Leapmotor have all deployed strong products. Dongfeng Fengshen's three-car simultaneous launch faces direct competition with these rivals. Its differentiation strategy lies in "state-owned enterprise endorsement plus full core technology transfer plus full powertrain coverage"—consumers can choose from three powertrain forms within the same brand, a one-stop choice not commonly seen in other brands.

From a broader perspective, the Fengshen L series three-car launch is a key move in Dongfeng Group's new energy strategy. As China's second-largest automotive group, Dongfeng was once considered relatively conservative in its new energy transformation pace. This full transfer of core technologies to Fengshen and simultaneous launch of three new models indicates that Dongfeng is accelerating to make up for its new energy transition. Against the backdrop of increasingly emphasizing innovation capabilities and market responsiveness in state-owned enterprise assessments, Fengshen's transformation results will become a touchstone for testing Dongfeng Group's reform determination.

The three new models will sequentially launch starting August, and the market will give the final judgment on this display of "state-owned enterprise hard power." On the most crowded family SUV track from 100,000 to 200,000 yuan, whether Dongfeng Fengshen can gain a foothold with its three-car matrix remains to be seen.
