China: Fuel Vehicle Share Falls Below One-Third as NEV Penetration Hits 67%

Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) show that in September 2026, the market share of China's fuel-powered passenger vehicles fell below one-third for the first time, while the penetration rate of new energy vehicles rose to 67% and the share of battery electric vehicles reached 47.3%. Product advances, policy orientation and young consumers' preferences are jointly driving the structural shift. Joint-venture brands and traditional dealership and repair systems are under pressure, with the number of auto repair shops falling from 382,000 to 345,000 in half a year. The industry is shifting from fuel-dominated to new-energy-dominated, but fuel vehicles will still coexist with new energy vehicles over the long term in scenarios such as long-distance travel and low temperatures, and the industrial chain needs to complete business and talent structure adjustments during the transition period.

China-EU Consultations Signal Easing as Four Automakers Chart Different Paths

China-EU Consultations Signal Easing as Four Automakers Chart Different Paths

The second regular meeting of the China-EU Trade and Investment Consultation Mechanism was held in Beijing from October 8 to 9. The two sides reached an understanding on hybrid vehicle trade and agreed to advance price undertakings and review procedures in the electric vehicle anti-subsidy case. On October 14, Changan, Leapmotor, Dongfeng and GAC successively expressed support, but their European focuses vary: Changan stressed localization "in Europe, for Europe"; Leapmotor said it has established more than 1,000 outlets in 36 countries and entered local manufacturing; Dongfeng focuses on compliance and taking hybrid technology overseas; and GAC is deepening local cooperation. Industry insiders believe trade costs remain a key variable in automakers' European investment decisions.

Chery, Bosch sign Europe ADAS nomination; production to start in 2028, over 800,000 units in five years

Chery Automobile and Bosch signed a project nomination in Paris. The two parties will cooperate on Chery's first batch of localized ADAS projects in Europe, covering Bosch's fourth-generation multi-purpose camera MPC4 and an integrated driving and parking system. The system is planned to be installed on six all-new Chery models, with mass production to start in 2028 and total output expected to exceed 800,000 units over a five-year cycle. Bosch disclosed that MPC4 series camera nominations have covered more than 50 models, with orders exceeding the ten-million-unit level; its one-stage high-level intelligent driving assistance solution has completed testing and validation in Germany, France, and Japan, and is planned to achieve road adaptation validation in multiple regions including North America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the EU within 2026. This nomination reflects that Chinese automakers' going global is extending from vehicle exports to localization of the intelligent supply chain.

The industry's focus is shifting from export scale to the depth of globalization. The degree of openness of overseas markets varies significantly. Chinese automakers are advancing globalization through local factory construction, product portfolios, and ecosystem-based operations. According to statistics from Gasgoo Automotive Research Institute, the planned annual overseas production capacity of Chinese automakers increased from about 3.44 million units in 2023 to nearly 6.85 million units in 2026.

Anfia Proposes Zero Tariffs on Chinese Car Imports Within 8% Quota

Anfia Proposes Zero Tariffs on Chinese Car Imports Within 8% Quota

Vavassori, president of the Italian automotive components association Anfia, proposed that the EU set an import quota for cars made in China, with zero tariffs for up to 8% and an 80% tariff on the portion above that, covering components as well. Chinese brands currently account for more than 9% of new car sales in the EU, and the EU's current combined tariff rate on Chinese EVs is about 18% to 45%. Italian component exports fell 4.6% in the first half, may decline 10% for the full year, and could fall 40% to 50% by 2028 without protection. Whether the proposal can enter the EU agenda remains to be seen.
