BYD Recalls 183,211 Tang and Qin Vehicles in China Over Brake Pedal Stopper Pad Material Defect

On September 18, 2026, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued an announcement that BYD is recalling some Tang and Qin series models, totaling 183,211 vehicles, with production spanning from 2014 to 2022. The recall is due to abnormal material in the brake pedal limit pad, which may crack and fall off and cause the brake lights to illuminate incorrectly. BYD will replace the improved parts free of charge. The Tang series recall involves 142,895 vehicles, and the Qin series 40,316 vehicles. From January to August this year, cumulative sales of the Tang and Qin fell 34.96% and 52.88% year on year, respectively. During the same period, BYD's August new energy vehicle sales were 440,293, up 17.84% year on year.

Chinese Brands Hold 20% of UK Car Market; Nissan Executive Says UK May Need Tariffs on Chinese Cars

Chinese Brands Hold 20% of UK Car Market; Nissan Executive Says UK May Need Tariffs on Chinese Cars

According to Bloomberg, Nissan executive Massimiliano Messina said that if the UK wants equal treatment under EU rules of origin, it may need to impose trade tariffs on Chinese cars. Chinese brands currently account for 20% of UK market sales, and the UK has not yet followed the EU in imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, while the EU's "made in the EU" rules could exclude UK production from subsidies. Nissan previously announced a £170 million investment to produce a hybrid SUV at its Sunderland plant. This policy gap and concerns about circumvention will affect Chinese automakers' access to the European market and their localization plans.

10% vs 45% Tariff Gap: Why Hybrid Vehicles Are the EU’s New China Trade Focus

10% vs 45% Tariff Gap: Why Hybrid Vehicles Are the EU’s New China Trade Focus

The EU plans to extend trade restrictions from pure electric vehicles to hybrid vehicles. The Financial Times reports that the EU is seeking to negotiate a voluntary limit by China on hybrid vehicle exports to Europe, and may impose additional tariffs if no agreement can be reached. Currently, Chinese-made hybrids are subject to a 10% tariff on exports to Europe, while pure electric vehicles face up to about 45%. EU imports of hybrids from China rose from 3,800 units in October 2024 to 50,000 in July 2026, with average prices falling over the same period. The EU's trade deficit with China is about 1 billion euros a day on average, and Trade Commissioner Sefcovic is expected to visit China in October for consultations; the outcome of the negotiations will affect the cost structure of Chinese automakers in Europe.
