From September 15 to 16, Geely Galaxy's hardcore off-road SUV Zhanjian 700 opened presales, while BAIC Arcfox's mid-to-large SUV Alpha T7 was officially launched. The Alpha T7 is priced from 137,800 to 174,800 yuan after subsidies, with over 30,000 orders in the first 72 hours of presales, a maximum pure electric range of 715 km, and a combined extended-range range of 1,315 km. The Zhanjian 700 uses a tri-motor four-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid system, with a combined output of 830 kW and a pure electric range of 165 to 185 km. The two vehicles show that Chinese brands are increasing their bets on the mid-to-large SUV and hardcore off-road markets with 800V platforms, lidar, and electrified off-road features. Overseas sales arrangements have not yet been disclosed.
From September 15 to 16, China's new energy SUV market saw new milestones emerge in two sub-segments in succession. Geely Galaxy's first hardcore off-road SUV, the Cruiser 700, opened pre-sales on September 15; the next day, BAIC Arcfox's mid-to-large SUV, the Alpha T7, was officially launched. The pricing ranges, powertrain forms and technology configurations of the two vehicles outline Chinese brands' product offensive in the two growth tracks of mainstream mid-to-large SUVs and hardcore off-road vehicles.
Arcfox Alpha T7: A dual-powertrain route in the 130,000-yuan class
The Alpha T7 opened pre-sales on August 26, with a post-subsidy price range of 137,800 yuan to 174,800 yuan (about $20,330 and up). According to Arcfox, orders exceeded 30,000 units within 72 hours of pre-sales opening.
In terms of body dimensions, the Alpha T7 is 5,020 mm long, has a wheelbase of 3,040 mm, adopts a coupe-style SUV design, and has a trunk volume of 645 liters, expanding to 1,845 liters with the rear seats folded down. The lineup includes 9 rear-wheel-drive versions in total, of which 4 are extended-range and 5 are pure electric.
The pure electric versions are all based on an 800V platform and are equipped with a 227 kW motor. The entry-level 650 Plus is equipped with a 75.4 kWh battery and has a CLTC range of 650 km; the other versions use an 84.8 kWh battery and have a range of 715 km. The extended-range version consists of a 1.5-liter range extender, a 200 kW motor and a 43.9 kWh battery, with a CLTC pure electric range of 320 km and a combined range of 1,315 km.
Intelligent configurations vary by version: the four models equipped with Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 Pro have 27 sensors, including one hidden LiDAR; some non-Qiankun versions use BAIC's in-house Yuanjing smart driving system and a roof-mounted LiDAR; the entry-level extended-range 1315 Plus does not list a branded smart driving system and is not equipped with LiDAR. Battery cells for the entire lineup are supplied by CATL, the chassis was tuned with Magna's involvement, and it is equipped with CDC continuously variable damping shock absorbers.
Arcfox positions the Alpha T7 as its flagship model for this year, and it previously made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show. For this brand, which has long been under sales pressure, the vehicle carries the task of driving volume growth. During the same period, Arcfox also launched the Beta T1 small EV with a limited-time starting price of 62,800 yuan (about $9,290).
Galaxy Cruiser 700: An electrified configuration list for hardcore off-road
The Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 made its debut on July 24, opened pre-sales on September 15, and is scheduled for official launch within the year. The vehicle is equipped with a tri-motor four-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid system, with a combined output of 830 kW (1,113 hp), and features a differential lock.
According to previous regulatory filings, the Cruiser 700 lineup is equipped with a 47.14 kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery, has a pure electric range of 165 to 185 km, and offers a choice of a 1.5T or 2.0T engine. The vehicle has a 5-seat layout, is 5,085 mm long, and has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm; the boxy body, side-opening tailgate and externally mounted spare tire continue the styling characteristics of traditional off-road vehicles.
In terms of off-road and intelligent configurations, the vehicle is equipped with Geely's in-house GVMC vehicle motion control system, supporting functions such as crab walk and tank turn; Geely Galaxy previously said its wading depth can reach 800 mm and that it supports satellite communication. The vehicle is equipped with a roof-mounted LiDAR and supports advanced driver assistance functions.
The sub-segment it is entering is attracting more and more Chinese automakers. BYD and Great Wall have already launched multiple hardcore off-road SUVs, and electrification and intelligent driving have become the focus of competition in this field.
In terms of sales, Geely Galaxy sold 119,115 vehicles in August, up 7.63% year-on-year and 10.50% month-on-month, marking the third consecutive month of year-on-year growth; cumulative sales in the first eight months were 746,705 vehicles, down 0.98% year-on-year, a narrower decline than the 5.22% in the first half.
The common logic of the two product lines
Observing the two vehicles together reveals a similar product approach: entering two sub-segments with intensifying competition by offering larger body dimensions, longer range combinations and more complete smart driving configurations.
In the price band below 200,000 yuan, mid-to-large SUVs are increasingly equipped with features such as 800V high-voltage platforms, extended-range or plug-in hybrid dual powertrains, LiDAR and variable damping suspension; while in the hardcore off-road field, functions that originally belonged to high-end models, such as tri-motor four-wheel drive, differential locks, crab walk and tank turn, are beginning to appear on the feature lists of Chinese brands' new products. Both vehicles use CATL supply for batteries, which also shows that leading battery companies' supporting capabilities are simultaneously covering multiple price bands.
From the perspective of market competition, Arcfox needs the Alpha T7 to improve its sales performance, while Geely Galaxy hopes to broaden its product line at a stage when Galaxy brand sales are gradually recovering. What the two have in common is that their product definitions are highly dependent on the cost structure of China's local supply chain in batteries, electric drive and smart driving solutions.
Observations from an overseas expansion perspective
It should be noted that the above order and sales data all come from the Chinese market, and the information disclosed this time does not involve overseas sales arrangements for the two models, so it is not appropriate to make quantitative judgments about their export pace.
From a product definition perspective, the 800V platform, extended-range solution, CATL cells, LiDAR and third-party chassis tuning constitute a mature combination of China's supply chain and are also the basis for domestic pricing. If such product strength and production capacity are extended overseas, they will still need to face a series of variables such as tariffs and access policies, local production requirements, differences in charging standards, and ro-ro shipping capacity. Mid-to-large SUVs and hardcore off-road vehicles are categories with relatively high premiums in some overseas markets, and their pricing space differs from that in China, so product structure and configuration trade-offs may also be adjusted accordingly. Whether the related models will later launch overseas versions and which regional markets they will choose still await further disclosure from the companies.
