China's passenger vehicle exports reached 888,000 units in August, with NEV exports hitting 518,000 units, surging 154.7% year-on-year and accounting for 58.4% of total passenger vehicle exports. Pure electric models dominated NEV exports at 63.4%.

August Passenger Vehicle Export Performance

According to the latest data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on September 8, China's total passenger vehicle exports (including complete vehicles and CKD kits) reached 888,000 units in August, up 77.8% year-on-year. NEV passenger vehicle exports totaled 518,000 units, surging 154.7% YoY and representing 58.4% of total passenger vehicle exports.

The passenger vehicle market showed signs of month-on-month recovery but remained under year-on-year pressure. Total retail sales of passenger vehicles reached 1.541 million units in August, down 23.6% YoY but up 5.5% MoM. CPCA analyst Cui Dongshu attributed the MoM rebound to rising policy expectations and other supporting factors.

Key highlights of the export market include:

  • NEV export growth significantly outpaced overall export growth
  • Pure electric models maintained dominant share in NEV exports
  • Chinese brands continued to gain recognition in overseas markets

NEV Export Structure Analysis

By powertrain type, August NEV exports showed the following characteristics:

  1. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 68.3% of NEV retail sales and led growth, representing 63.4% of NEV export volume
  2. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) served as transitional and supplementary technology, holding around 20% share
  3. Range-extended EVs accounted for less than 10% of the market

Cui Dongshu noted that BEVs remain the mainstream of the NEV market in the long term. As battery costs decline and charging infrastructure improves, BEV share is expected to steadily rise to 70%-75%.

On the ICE vehicle front, affected by high fuel prices, gasoline vehicle retail sales plunged over 40% YoY in August.

Market Outlook and Trends

Looking ahead, Cui expects the market to continue its MoM recovery in September. Key factors to watch:

  • The trade-in subsidy policy continues to strengthen, with more regions expected to add incentives
  • The trend toward larger EVs is becoming more pronounced, with National Day holiday travel demand likely to boost large EV sales
  • AI-driven smart driving is creating new consumer demand, with growing interest in intelligent driving features

Cui also noted that September marks the critical sales window for the traditional "Golden September, Silver October" peak season. Promotional campaigns by brands will likely be pulse-style冲刺s focused on volume and inventory clearance rather than triggering price wars.
