Dongfeng iD5-300SN: 1000V Architecture + SiC, 30% Power Density Boost

On July 29, Dongfeng Motor unveiled the iD5-300SN 1000V electric drive and a megawatt-class fast charging prototype at its Global Innovation Center, with 300kW peak power and single-gun output up to 1.5MW.

iD5-300SN: Dongfeng's First Kilovolt Drive Unit

On July 29, Dongfeng Motor formally rolled out two prototypes at its Global Innovation Center: the 1000V iD5-300SN electric drive system and a megawatt-class fast charging system. Both remain at the prototype stage, with no series production timetable or commercial deployment plan yet disclosed. The iD5-300SN is Dongfeng's first electric drive designed for a 1000V vehicle architecture. Its core specs are as follows:

The drive uses a silicon carbide (SiC) power module rated at 1500V, with an operating range of 450 to 1000 volts extendable to future 1200V applications. Dongfeng states the design is compatible with current 800V platforms. Its 300kW peak output is sufficient to support high-performance pure-electric vehicles. Notably, the iD5-300SN integrates a boost-charging function that reuses motor windings to raise input voltage. This means even when connected to widely deployed 500V or 750V fast chargers, the vehicle can achieve 180kW charging power — significantly improving compatibility with existing infrastructure. EX1000.COM believes this "backward compatibility" approach is particularly important for overseas markets, where charging networks remain concentrated in the 400V-750V range.

Megawatt Fast Charging: A 1.5MW Single-Gun Revolution

Alongside the drive system, Dongfeng unveiled its first fully in-house developed megawatt-class high-power charging system. Its flagship performance metrics are impressive: Core charging parameters:

The single-gun 1.5MW peak output matches China's highest energy-efficiency tier (Tier 1) under the updated GB 46519-2025 standard. Dongfeng claims "overall efficiency of at least 96.7%," placing the system among the industry's first batch of Tier 1 high-power charging products. This output level matches BYD's second-generation Flash Charging system (single-gun peak 1.5MW) unveiled in March. However, Dongfeng emphasizes that its megawatt charger is fully self-developed, with a modular core cabinet design supporting both passenger and commercial vehicles, and plans to develop higher-output variants. Dongfeng also revealed it is developing a next-generation ultra-fast charger with integrated energy storage, planning a charging product portfolio ranging from 720kW to 2.4MW to cover both passenger and commercial vehicle scenarios.

Technology Roadmap and Production Prospects

Mr. You Zheng, Deputy President of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, positioned the two prototypes as part of a broader technology roadmap spanning solid-state batteries, high-voltage electric drives, megawatt charging, and modular vehicle platforms. He also called on Dongfeng subsidiary Yutron Technology to collaborate with charging-infrastructure operators on deploying compatible systems. Such cooperation is essential if higher charging capability is to translate into shorter charging times for passenger vehicles and electric commercial fleets. Dongfeng's technology portfolio also includes:

  1. Solid-state batteries: 350Wh/kg energy density, targeting September 2026 mass production
  2. Mach Ultra-kV platform: 1200V ultra-high-voltage pure-electric architecture
  3. 12C ultra-fast-charging composite cells: supporting single-gun 2MW charging
  4. 1700V SiC power module: independently developed

From prototypes to mass production, Dongfeng still faces multiple challenges:

  • Vehicle battery systems must match megawatt charging in voltage architecture and thermal management
  • Charging site grid capacity and distribution facilities need major upgrades
  • Solid-state battery and high-voltage platform timelines remain partially unclear

Currently, the iD5-300SN will join Dongfeng's Mach Power technology portfolio and support the first kilovolt model from the EPICLAND brand — a joint development with Huawei. This indicates Dongfeng's high-voltage technology roadmap is more than conceptual, with concrete vehicle deployment plans already in place.
