August NEV Exports Up ~130%; 15th Five-Year Plan Targets 70% Passenger Vehicles

Data from CAAM show that in August 2026, China's new energy vehicle sales reached 1.643 million units, up 17.8% year on year, accounting for 60.6% of total vehicle sales. Of these, exports were 526,000 units, up about 130% year on year, while domestic sales were 1.118 million units, down 4.6% year on year, intensifying the divergence between domestic and external demand. During the same period, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and nine other departments issued the 15th Five-Year Plan for intelligent connected new energy vehicles, proposing that by 2030 new energy vehicles account for 70% of new passenger vehicle sales and 40% of new commercial vehicle sales, and strengthening capacity monitoring, mergers and reorganizations, and supervision of competitive order, which will continue to affect the pace of domestic consolidation and overseas expansion in the industry.

NEV Penetration Breaks 64%, China's Auto Market Enters Post-Growth Era

In 2026, China's NEV industry has reached a critical inflection point. Penetration hit 56.9% in May and is expected to reach 64.5% in July. Yet the other side of the coin is equally stark: H1 auto industry profit margins fell to 3.8%, the lowest in a decade; purchase tax exemptions were halved; and the EU imposed anti-subsidy tariffs up to 45.3%. The competitive logic has fundamentally shifted from who runs faster to who stands firmer.

China's NEV H1 Penetration Exceeds 57%, Domestic Brands Fully Dominate

In the first half of 2026, China's NEV market showed structural divergence. NEV penetration has stabilized above 57%, with domestic brands fully dominating. BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor have widened their lead through multi-brand portfolios, global exports, and full-category layouts. The industry has ended the universal growth era, with premiumization, globalization, brand stratification, and self-developed technology becoming the four core variables determining growth ceilings.
